Evaluation Part 2

Evaluation 7

From my preliminary task i have come on a lot. First of all the planning help me to base my whole project around, without this i would of been able to make a product because without research and before i did this project i didnt understand how magazines where layout in the industry. Also i didnt understand the genre i picked properly and now i understand them in much more detail and what they like ect.
I now have a better understanding of how to use all of the software and programs and also now understand what an audience wants and how to give it them. I have learnt that you can attract an particular genre of people by using one image and so on. Also i leant how to manage my time better and now understand that it takes a lot more time then you first think to make something look like you want it to. By doing a lot more research i now understand how magazines are layout and how different genre are targeted using words, pictures and colours and how effects of images can trigger off emotions.

Evaluation 6

I have used lots of different technology whilst doing this project. Some of the programs i have learnt to use will help me in later life.
digital SLR camera
I used these to take all of my photos, before i did this project i would of just got the camera and pointed it and clicked the button. But know i understand how to focus, turn flash on and off, lighting etc. I also understand how the position of the camera helps to make a good shot. My favourite technique i learnt is how to focus on an item and blur out the background.

Photoshop
This program was the most influencial out of the whole product and my whole of my frontcover was done on this. I now know how to edit blemishes, increase lighting or shadowing ect. I think its really beeficial for me to learn how to use these programs because i can now use them in later life.

Prezi
I used this to make presentation, i really enjoy using prezi and i think that i will continue to use this for other things rather than just media. It is a presentation program that you can zoom and edit really easy.

Adobe Indesign
This is the program i made all of my double page spread and contents on. It is used by professionals in the industry and if i didnt use this then i wouldnt of been able to make a product like i did. This has learnt me how to lay things out properly and i have been able to use all of the tools on there like the drop shadow and the wrapping of text tool.

Evaluation question 4 and 5

Audience Profile
  • Your between 15 – 25 years old.
  • Your interests in music are always low key artists such as Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes.
  • Your nearly always found with your camera
  • Your interested in fashion but never follow the new trends, you prefer a more vintage look.
  • You enjoy going to festivals and gigs on a regular basis
  • You would choose a starbucks or cafe nero over any Nescafe coffee
  • You always take pride in your appearance and sense of individuality
The audience that are going to read my magazine are affluent young men and women, who spend their time in coffee shops and at Camden Town market, wearing Doctor Martens, skinny jeans and baggy, vintage, 'grandad' jumpers. They enjoy mostly alternative, indie music but appreciate all genres, attending festivals such as V Festival and for those who are under 18, the Underage Festival in London.

My target audience would be classed as Radicals.

This was my audience profile and this would still apply to the current people that i target my magazine at. My magazine is different and unusual compared to what you currently find on the market. I am trying to attract people that class themselves as 'outsiders' to society hence the name of my magazine, these people don't follow the crowd are are interested  in different more independent artists.

The video below shows me asking some of my target market what they thought of my magazine, the majority felt like they would use my magazine and would most likely buy it but then there was others that felt it was too empty. From the feedback i got it shows that my audience likes my magazine, they said they like the colours and the fact it draws you in. They also feel like it represents them as a person and a lot of the images reflect them and there way of life. I am happy about the comments made on the pictures because this was something i really tried to attract my target audience with, by using images i though reflected there lifestyle and would appeal to them and what they do, also there where comments about how its different. This was the main aim of my magazine so i am happy that these comments where made.
The things i could improve on would be maybe to add more colour, to the double page spread and front cover, also they think i could of maybe made the cover lines a little bit more clear. I will certainly keep these comment in mind and if i was to do it again i would maybe lay out the coverlines around the page but still making it look simplistic.

Evaluation Part 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The four main distributors for the magazine industry are Marketforce, Comag, Frontline and Seymour. They have national and international distribution networks that will have access to major retail outlets like W H Smith and online platforms. Major magazines like NME etc distrobute through companies like this, this is because they are trying to sell the magazine to as many people as possible and reach the mass market. Where as my magazine is much more specialist and targets a radical market, they dont like to follow the mainstream, so by having my magazine is shops such as W H Smith it would put my audience off buying it because it could turn mainstream. Although the magazine that i have based all my research on Clash does distrobute through a major company called Comag. This magazine appeals to the same kind of people as mine and this has really worked for them and the magazine has become really popular because it is so much different to what is normally sold on the selves. The danger with this is that the magazine can become too common and the main audience that it was first targeted at loose interest.

Independent distributors will have access to smaller independent news retailors, specialist book stores and may distribute online. My magazine is target to a niche market so I would probably distribute it through a smaller independent company. Vice a magazine that is targeted to a similar target audience have there own distribution network, Vice is not normally found in your normal corner shops, these types of magazine are distributed on a much smaller scale to major distributors. It is found in shops that sell independent music, like the rough trade shop, this is a specialist independent shop that only sells its own music. This would appeal to my genre because they like independent bands, and things that are classed as mainstream. Although some people may see it as risky not to go for major distribution it is because i know the audience i am going for is very loyal and will travel in order to get it and the fact that it isnt easy to get would appeal to them. Also i would be able to distribute through the internet and sell my magazine through there and as technology is developing this is going to get easier and easier and its also the cheapest way or distributing. Also if i sell online then it means i can distribute and advertise through many different platforms such as social networks.
Vice is an independent company and they have a facebook page that people can like and is pushes you in to buying the magazine. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Vice-Magazine/110376875652502
Overall i would market and distribute my product like vice does, they do really well and attract a good market of people that they targeted. It would be too much of a risk to go and distribute it though a large company because it would then become mainstream which is not what my magazine is about.
